the formless track
is a collaboration between Zen Master Hyon Gak Sunim and UK artist Arman Ray. Sunim is a Dharma heir of Zen Master Seung Sahn and an important figure in the transmission of Korean Zen to the West.
What began as an exploration of spoken Zen teaching within electronic music has grown, over six years, into an extensive body of sound, image and film.
The project brings a living Zen tradition into dialogue with contemporary digital culture. Sunim’s voice and teaching remain at its centre, while Ray shapes the electronic music, visual language and audiovisual form through which the work is encountered.
The result is not a conventional album project, nor an attempt to modernise Zen, but an ongoing search for forms capable of carrying its directness into the present.
